Dec 7, 2011 - A bridge and ladder are spans, their use is interchangeable if they are prefabricated and portable. You must look at the context the word is placed in to determine the actual meaning.

Dec 7, 2011 - - I think Antony was speaking more along the lines that they are different kanji for the same "sound" and should not be so literal like a specific "word". Of course,..ladders help you climb up. Bridges help you go over; without question, you can lay a ladder down and use it as a bridge. Just like the ninja used the tsuba of their sword to aid as a ladder to help climb up walls. But I don't think that was Antony's point though, maybe I heard it wrong,...

Dec 7, 2011 - I understand his overall gist, I don't think that his premise of phonetics is the key to unlocking the mystery of the one that they cannot decipher. Context is always an important factor. "Hikakushi" could very well be "descending bridge", a strategy to sabotage a bridge with fire or explosives etc. Or the rungs of a ladder being used to hide firearms or explosives. Without context, it is hard to say.
