One of the beautiful things about jiu-jitsu is that once you understand the basic principles of leverage and breakage, there is virtually no limit to the number of ways you can submit your opponent. On the undercard for this weekend's UFC fights, we saw the first reverse calf-slicer ever used in MMA. In this Gracie Breakdown, Rener and Ralek Gracie break down the beautiful chain of leg attacks that Charles Oliveira used to submit Eric Wisely and they announce the winner of the last Gracie Giveaway, a brand new Series 1 Gracie Pearl Weave Gi. Watch it, learn it, and help us create more students of the gentle art by sharing it. Apr 9, 2012 - I remember guys putting this on me from time to time at one of my old classes. It used induce a bit of pain but nothing more. So, being Mr big balls, I said that calf-slicers don't affect me. Of course, then my 'sensei' asked for a try. Big black guy, massive forearms. Needless to say, I felt my knee almost tear into three pieces! DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE SLICER!

Apr 16, 2012 - I train but any of the factors you've mentioned wouldn't keep me from learning the "Gentle Art" I have done Japanese JuJitsu for 2 years but I felt it lacked a good ground element, I'm settling in at Gracie Barra and really enjoying it. I've earned my first stripe in a month. Honestly guys if you haven't trained and you're thinking about it, go for it.. There's nothing to lose.

Apr 17, 2012 - i used to train when i was young with my grandad in his garden then when i moved to greece i learned judo throws but now my grandad has had 2 heart attacks, he survived but he is now 63 and i am 16 and wouldnt be right if i practiced on him. i am starting up again but i feel less able to do that stuff because i am 6ft6 and really slim and apparently ive been told that its better when your short so you can do this stuff ? thanks guys

Apr 26, 2012 - Tall people have great tools for BJJ. The triangle choke is the best friend of of tall Jiu Jitsu practitioners. BJJ is great because there are strengths for every body type. Get into it young!

May 20, 2012 - its easier to break a long arm or leg too ))
bjj1605 Says:
May 21, 2012 - better for judo maybe. Not BJJ. I've 6'5 and 190lbs. People tell me I've got the perfect body for bjj.
gamemeister27 Says:
May 25, 2012 - You've got a great build for striking bro! If you walk around at 190, you might....MIGHT be able to make 170 and be the tallest by a longshot. If not, you'll have to give one inch to one guy at 185 in the ufc. However, the long limbs do actually make your submissions more dangerous as well. Look at Stefan Struve and Jon Jones. You get more leverage than almost anyone with disproportionately long limbs for your weight class.
bjj1605 Says:
May 25, 2012 - Thanks for the compliment. I train BJJ and Striking with Team Curran MMA. I'm a purple belt and I've been striking for about 4 1/2 years. Not looking to fight tho ;)
gamemeister27 Says:
May 25, 2012 - BJJ It's only gay if you make eye contact.
