Austin police have released the surveillance video of white Texas grandfather Scott Henson being handcuffed on the night of Feb. 10, 2012, in an effort to disprove his claim that officers were "rough" and came at him "tasers drawn" while he was walking home from a local ice skating rink with his 5-year-old black granddaughter Ty. Henson called the incident a case of "baby-sitting while white." Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told the American Statesman in a news conference Tuesday that Henson lied about having had tasers drawn on him, and that if the surveillance video is watched carefully, it can also be seen that APD officers did not use excessive force. APD says they were responding to an anonymous 911 call from someone who claimed to have seen a white man (Henson) chasing a little African-American girl (Ty) into the woods. On his blog, Grits For Breakfast, Henson notes in his post from the night after the incident that this was the second time local police had approached him and his granddaughter that day, leading him to feel that it was a case of racial profiling. "Had that been a real, legitimate kidnapping, and we would have responded with one or two officers in a nonchalant manner, the same exact critics that are criticizing us now would be saying that the Austin police department does not care about an African-American little girl being kidnapped from the Millennium Center," Acevedo told American Statesman - 22 February 2012.

Feb 22, 2012 - OK, good, in this case the dash cam video seems to help the Austin Police. The situation after less than three weeks ago and the cops have released the video in their own defendes. OK, then why haven't the Austin Police released the video from the January 1st case where they arrested the "passenger" in a dwi case and also arrested the man who recorded that action and questioned their brutality against the woman. Still not released that tape yet? Because in that case it shows they lied?

Feb 22, 2012 - Why was he put into cuffs and the girl taken away?

44prot Says:

Feb 22, 2012 - Allow me,please! I apologize that The APD over reacted, terrified, cuffed and humiliated a man, walking out in open, unhidden,in front of god and everyone, then terrified a child, took the child away from her grandfather, because of one call from a person who saw a white man walking with a black child, then felt compelled to make an emergency call to the APD.I apologize for the constant thoughts in my head and comments I would love to make right now for YOU daring to suggest HE OWES YOU ANYTHING! Fu@# U

44prot Says:

Feb 22, 2012 - Okay,I'm not sorry for anything I have posted but I am sorry for going on my rants at times. It's not an excuse, but only an explanation, when I tell anyone how totally screwed up I am,after experiencing the abuse and false arrest, then what I went through while spending 32 days in jail for nothing, from the prison employees.I have no one to talk to,no support and its getting worse every day.I cant stand having this rage and these thoughts inside my head ALL THE TIME.I want justice, and I never got it

WhatsReallyGoingOnUS Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - I think the cops acted appropriately considering that a citizen had called this in. That said, I think they owe the grandfather and the granddaughter a written apology ... BECAUSE THEY WERE WRONG. The fact that he blogged some detail that was incorrect is moot. And, what a way to give a little black girl a glimpse of the racism this world has to offer. I wonder how long it took for them to determine that the girl was the guy's granddaughter.

p165711 Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - Are you deliberately provocative or just dim?

1775novten Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - Neither, I'm just a bit taken aback that some anonymous call that wasn't substantiated by any evidence can result in some citizen being cuffed and child seized by the government.

p165711 Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - The police first duty is a) Protection of life, both the public and their own. Period. Their action is totally vindicated in this case. Acting upon coherent information, they find the suspect. They immediately cuff him and whisk the girl away from danger. Have you people any idea how many cops are shot, stabbed or assaulted by suspects each year because they were overly liberal in dealings with unknown suspects. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Plus they want to go home in one piece.

warecal Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - First of all, APD is guilty of assaulting a citizen without a warrant. second, APD did unwarranted conspire with an unknown felon to kidnap a child; terrorize the child with only hearsay evidence that any crime had been committed. The Chief, as further evidence indicates is also guilty of conspiring to cover up a federal crime of attempted kidnapping and illegal arrest of an innocent citizen walking down the street of HIS home town.

warecal Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - The only just recourse to all this action is to find the caller, and arrest all three officers involved, and suspend them and the Chief for unethical action without due cause. Assaulting a citizen walking down the street without due cause and only some hearsay call: this video and it's response makes it easy for anyone to manipulate the system to cause harm or disarray to someone else. The caller was obviously the one that needs ethical help.

MrUlltang Says:

Feb 24, 2012 - Fantastic!!! He did not get tased! I am shocked...

Jenna3220 Says:

Feb 28, 2012 - Wow, what a liar. She was not actually his granddaughter, she was the daughter of his goddaughter. There is a difference. He previously claimed he was stopped ONLY for babysitting while white but that's not true. The officers were responding to a call of a possible kidnapping. Of course he is going to be led away in cuffs until they are able to determine his relationship with the child. Imagine if it really was a kidnapping and they let him go based on his claim of being her grandfather.

smklan Says:

Apr 1, 2012 - He was detained why they figured out what was going on. Why take the little girl away from the reported kidnapper? You really need that explained?

1775novten Says:

Apr 2, 2012 - So anyone can make an anonymous call which could result in me getting detained and cuffed - even though no one has any evidence of a crime? Yes, I really need that explained. I don't have a problem with the police showing up, but I do have a problem with them arresting someone absent evidence of a crime and solely from an anonymous call.

smklan Says:

Apr 2, 2012 - You're mixing terms either because you don't understand the legal significance or are just straight up trolling. He was not ARRESTED, he was DETAINED. Yes a panicked 911 call saying he just kidnapped a little girl gives officers enough Reasonable Suspicion to effect a detention while investigating. An arrest requires probable cause. This was all hashed out by SCOTUS in Terry v Ohio. Cops screw up all the time but this one was by the book, yet you still criticize them.

1775novten Says:

Apr 2, 2012 - So no evidence of a crime, but just because someone was "panicked", it gives police the right to detain? Here's a hypothetical - what if I was at a bus stop and thought someone else at the bus stop was carrying an illegally concealed gun and it scared me, so I called the cops. Do you think the cops have the right to "Terry Stop" him and frisk him for concealed weapons?

Apr 17, 2012 - Couple months later and Austin police department is shooting a dog. APD is terrible. Every time they are in the news its they are running around like they are in an action flick. Its not a movie jackasses, learn to do your jobs without being inconsiderate jerks.
